Winter poses safety hazards for animals, too - Green Bay Press Gazette

BANISHING BEGGING You have made a wonderful meal and you have invited over friends. You gather around the table and soak in the sights and smells of the prepared meal and look forward to spending your time together. Then you realize that you are not the only one who appreciates the event. Your dog has arrived and is staring, pawing, and whining in a full theatrical production hoping to be paid in food. Begging is not a reality that most dog owners enjoy, and is appreciated by fewer guests. What if your dog does not beg for food, but instead begs for your attention? Why do dogs beg at all? How do you make them stop? Dogs beg because they are either looking for food, rank, or attention. Dogs who beg for food generally get what they want. To resolve this type of beggar you need to be sure that your dog never receives food during human food times. This means that you can never reward your dog with a treat at the table or during food preparation. Put the scraps off to the side and give it to your dog during its regular feeding times, in their bowl, if you must, but never give it to them during human food events. Never means never. Dogs are persistent and even a 1% chance will be worth pursuing. You will lose ground if anyone feeds the dog during their begging periods. In the dog world, the order in which the animals eat is an indication of their rank within the pack. Therefore, sometimes begging is a challenge for position within the family. The most powerful dogs eat first and the lowest ranking dog eats last. When a dog gets rewarded for begging, they eat at the same time, or before someone else, and therefore move up the leadership ladder. The rightful position of a canine companion is below all of the family members. Make sure that your dog does not eat during or before anyone in the household. Feed the dog in its own bowl, away from the dinner table, after the meal to maintain the proper balance in your family's hierarchy. Dogs who beg for attention exhibit the same whining, crying, and pawing behaviors, but, instead of food, pursue interaction. In order to reverse these behaviors, you need to avoid giving your dog attention during these times. Whenever they begin to act out, ignore them completely. No eye contact, no verbal reactions, no touching. If you respond during their tantrum, the dog will achieve the attention it is desires. Negative attention is still attention. Resume interaction when the dog stops its negative behavior. The dog will realize that it is only positive behavior that receives their desired outcome. Overcome the possible guilt that can come from ignoring the begging by giving your dog some of your quality time when they are doing the right thing, so that they know that they do not need to beg in the first place.

Cartoonimals Sim Closing in SL - Last Chance to See the Cutest Virtual Animals!
I have quite a few virtual birds and animals at my SL home, they add a bit of life as they wander and fly around the sim, just like the real thing, only without the care and attention you have to give to real pets! So when I heard that Cartoonimals, a business that sells SL creatures, owned and designed by Duggy Bing was closing, I decided to take a look. Duggy has a notice displayed at the sim saying it will close on February 14, so you still have a chance to see all his wonderful work on display until that time. All is not lost, however, as his creations will still be available on Second Life MarketPlace.

I had guessed by the name Cartoonimals that perhaps the animals were more of a comical nature than true representations of their real life counterparts, and I wasn’t wrong! I simply fell in love with the SL beasts as soon as I saw them! They just raise a smile with their cuteness!!

I hadn’t really intended to make it a shopping trip, but ended up coming away with some gophers, an owl and a playful skunk who walks around omitting a green cloud every now and again! No wonder his name is Stinky!

Duggy has designed some of the best tip jars I’ve seen, all little creatures in their various poses, a cat playing a violin, a disc jocky dog with his record deck, even a little hoola hoola cat with her grass skirt! Not to mention a cartoon Elvis with his white rhinestone suit.

The jungle animals are so funny, the Elephants and Hippos with their big eyes blinking in the SL sunlight. The flamingos are busy watching one of their eggs hatch as a baby flamingo’s head pops out from the cracked shell! As you walk around you notice a chimpanzee overhead on a swing; there is an invitation by way of a pose ball to join him in the air, clicking on the pose I was suddenly holding hands with the chimp as if on a trapeze, great fun!

For anyone with a pond on their land or access to some SL ocean, there are plenty of little creatures to choose from. Sharks raising their heads out of the water, various little cats and other animals swimming in colourful rubber tyres, most of them sporting sunglasses as they relax and drift along. Beware of the crocodiles though, big green monsters wandering around at the water’s edge! A frozen Island of cartoon penguins is a comical sight as one of their friends floats near to them on his own lump of ice. Just further along there are some dinosaurs, huge scaly and green, one of them taking a run at you as you walk along the footpath, whilst a pterodactyl swoops about in the sky.

Duggy has some human cartoon figures too, a hilarious assortment of characters to wear as accessories with your own avatar. You can buy two burly bare-chested bodyguards who walk with you when you rez them, or for the men a cartoon lady who grabs your ankle as you try to walk away, like an adoring fan who just won’t let go!

I’m sad that the sim is closing, it’s enjoyable just going there to see, in person, all the brilliant creations that Duggy has made, so be sure to go and take a look before it finally close down in February. Meanwhile wishing Duggy every success with his business on the ever popular MarketPlace! No doubt I’ll be shopping for some more creatures soon!
